Aussies explode as Queenslands Couran Cove blacks out

Tensions are escalating on a troubled resort off the Gold Coast with two owners engaging in a heated argument in front of the press over the spending of body corporate fees.

The Couran Cove Island Resort community is on edge as essential services are expected to be cut off to the entire island on Monday morning, leaving hundreds of homes without power, water, and gas.

Although most precincts still have services as of 10:30am, the eco precinct has been without them for several weeks. According to the Gold Coast Bulletin, this devastating blow is due to alleged unpaid body corporate fees, with service provider Simon Napoli warning that all 360 dwellings in the resort will be affected.

The community is in turmoil, with permanent residents, part-time residents, holiday-makers, and NDIS participants (including people with disabilities and the elderly) affected by the cut-off. The NDIS Commission has relocated these participants to alternative accommodation.

Despite owners claiming to have paid their levies, millions of dollars are allegedly owed under service agreements. There are five bodies corporate involved in the dispute, with complex court proceedings underway.

About 70 residents who have chosen to stay on the island attended a community meeting on Sunday, where they shared emergency information and allocated jobs to people.

Rhonda Dalgleish says she has decided to stay on the island despite the ongoing issue.

“People are really scared - we’re miserable,” she said. “Everyone is nerve-wracked and sick with worry. People are starting to fight among themselves.”

Mick Reichle, another resident, said the community meeting was peaceful. However, fears of erupting tensions have prompted police to remain on standby to ensure public safety and order.

Gold Coast District acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said the ongoing disputes primarily involve a number of matters under current civil litigation, and that the police have been advised of possible action arising from the civil litigation.

“The ongoing disputes at Couran Cove are primarily a civil dispute between the bodies corporate and involve a number of matters under current civil litigation,” acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said.

“The Queensland Police Service have been advised of possible action arising out of the civil litigation which is planned to possibly occur on Monday and, if required, a policing presence will be there to ensure public safety and order.”
