Twitter Users are Mean When it Comes to Taylor Swift Without Makeup

Taylor Swift has undergone many changes throughout her career, both musically and physically.  When Swift released her self titled debut album in 2006, she was just a 16-year-old singer with dreams of becoming a famous country musician.  However, the album’s success quickly turned Swift’s dreams into reality and established her as a country music superstar.  On the album’s cover, Swift was pictured with big blonde hair and a flawless face perfect for a young country star.  Swift’s next three albums, Fearless, Speak Now, and Red, were also largely successful and further helped to solidify Swift’s career.  As Swift’s popularity grew, she helped bring country music into the mainstream, and suddenly teenage girls all over the world were supporting country music.  However, as her career continued, Swift began shedding her sweet and innocent country image.  Swift began transforming from a teen idol to a full-grown superstar and her appearance certainly followed suit.  Fans began to notice Swift’s subtle sex appeal and she quickly went from the girl who all of the other girls wanted to be, to the girl who all of the guys wanted to be with.

By the release of her fourth album, Red, Swift had also began to distance herself from country  music in general.  Although the album was nominated for the Best Country Album Grammy Award, its content also included a lot of pop songs, including the popular single, “22.”  On the album cover for Red, Swift appeared wearing bright red lipstick, a drastic change from the make-up free album cover of her debut album.  In 2014, after moving from Nashville, Tennessee to New York City, Swift released her long-awaited fifth album, 1989, Swift described the project as her “first documented official pop album.”  In its first week, the album sold more than one million copies and debut at number one on the Billboard 200.  Although the country music industry was sad to see Swift fully immerse herself in the pop genre, the move was definitely no surprise as Swift had seemingly become too popular to limit herself.

In the video for the album’s first single, “Shake it Off,” a song that was undeniably pop driven, Swift wore a number of costumes and an array of makeup combinations including gold lipstick, pink lipstick, and red lipstick.  While the video received mixed reviews if there was one thing all viewers could agree on, it was that Swift was hot.  Shortly after the video was released, the internet was buzzing with makeup tutorials for users who were desperate to duplicate Swift’s look(s).  However, in an interview discussing the video, Swift had some beauty tips of her own.  She shared with fans that daily face washing is important, although she admitted that she often struggles with removing her makeup. During the interview Swift also insinuated that she is aware that she looks different without the assistance of makeup.

Like most artists, Swift relies heavily on makeup to enhance her appearance in front of the many cameras she comes in contact with on an almost daily basis.  While some artists do not feel comfortable displaying their natural selves to the world, Swift has gone makeup free in public on more than one occasion, and the reactions have been very interesting.  While the opinions on Taylor Swift’s natural state vary from person to person, here are five tweets that suggest that Taylor Swift should never go without makeup.

Just looked up "Taylor Swift without makeup" and my phone literally crashed.

If you want to look up pictures of T. Swift without makeup, you may want to consider using a computer.  Apparently, cellphones are unable to handle images of a makeup free T.Swift.  While this user feels strongly that “Taylor Swift without makeup” doesn’t look anywhere near as good as Taylor Swift makeup, there are thousands, if not millions of fans, who wouldn’t hesitate to argue this statement.

While the term horrible is subjective, it is true that Taylor Swift definitely looks different without makeup.  In 2008, Swift posted makeup free for People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People Issue.  HecklerSpray.com joked that Swift was selfish to take photographs without dolling herself up, stating: “if you’re being heralded in one of the most famous celebrity magazines in the world purely on the basis of your appearance, then you owe it to the world to glam it up,” and perhaps they had a point.  When images of Swift in her natural state began circulating the internet many fans were shocked by the stark contrast.  After viewing the images, one fan commented that Swift looked “horrible,” while another went so far as to say that she looked “as ugly as her personality.”

"@DoveCameron: I feel like Taylor Swift doesn't age. She will forever be 19 to me." You must havnt seen her without makeup

Although Taylor Swift hasn’t been 19 for five years now, not even father time has been able to stop her from maintaining her youthful appearance.  But, let’s be real, Swift’s genes aren’t the only thing behind her fresh face, and Jessie has no problem crushing the dreams of a fellow Twitter user who believes that Taylor Swift has somehow discovered a magical fountain of youth.

This Twitter user was kind (or unkind, depending on how you look at it) enough to provide an image with the tweet.  This image may not be Swift’s most flattering, but at least she’s still recognizable, and that’s more than can be said for some other celebrities. Although Taylor Swift probably wouldn’t appreciate the comparison to a long-haired skateboarder, Avril Lavigne would certainly be proud to know that her song “Skater Boy” has inspired Swift so much that she wants to look just like one.

The only thing worse than looking like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, is actually being Gollum. Described as a “small, slimy creature” Lord of the Rings’ Gollum is pictured here showing his best smile for the camera.  The small hobbit, who has become a popular fictional figure, is well-known for referring to the Ring as “precious.”   However, thanks to a lot of money, a lot of makeup, and dental insurance, T. Swift will always have one up on Gollum.
